The One Who Really Loves You is the second album recorded by R&B singer and Motown recording artist Mary Wells, released in 1962 on the Motown label. Released after the runaway success of Wells' first top ten pop singles, the album became Motown's first top ten album peaking at number 8 on the pop album chart. The album featured the hits, The One Who Really Loves You and You Beat Me to the Punch and other singles such as the ballads Strange Love and Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right. Operator - Mary Wells. Her next LP, Two Lovers And Other Great Hits , was issued around the same time. On this occasion, apart from the title track and its flip, Operator, all the Motown songs were new ones. Mary also branched out into the world of standards, the beginning of a plan to move Motown artists over into the showbiz mainstream that was eventually realised in the success of the Supremes. Both albums feature the harmonies of the Love-Tones, Marys regular touring vocal back-up group, and the Andantes, Motowns studio backing singers, and all but one of the tracks were recorded at the companys Hitsville. This two-fer compilation collects Motown superstar Mary Wells' second and third albums, 1962's The One Who Really Loves You and 1963's Two Lovers. The collection's 20 tracks are Wells at her absolute prime, and reflect the highest points of Motown's early days. Still moving toward the soul-pop sound of the Supremes and the Temptations, these early albums were more rooted in smoky R&B with pop undertones. Two Lovers Album Version, Stereo. Mary Wells. Two Lovers was the third collaboration between Motown hit-makers Mary Wells and Smokey Robinson, following The One Who Really Loves You and You Beat Me to the Punch. The 1962 hit plays on a risqué theme of a woman torn between two lovers, one who's sweet and kind and one who makes her cry - and she ain't ashamed. But the surprise ending saved the song from the censors: you're a split personality, and in reality, both of them are you
